A Legacy of Philanthropy

With a philanthropist spirit, comes Will Kennemur. His interest in community service was influenced by his late mother, Mary Kennemur. Mary, who was a successful businesswoman, a volunteer, and a humanitarian, enjoyed the motto, "To whom much is given, much is expected." After her death in 2012, Will filtered his interests and signed up to be a volunteer for Junior Achievement of Greater South Carolina. He now teaches first graders at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, SC."I love kids and volunteering with JA is a great way to give back to my old school," said Will. "It didn't take long for me to move from being a stranger to students calling me Mr. Kennemur. Now the kids are full of questions about Heathwood when I was here, and there is no better feeling than to be greeted with smiles and hugs as I walk around campus."

Will has taught JA Our Families since 2013. He has witnessed the positive impact the program has had on many students. Recently, Will had one student in particular who interrupted class and did not want to pay attention. At the end of the program's curriculum, the student showed intense confidence in learning."He developed an amazing business plan for a cake business? he really got it. It was so rewarding to see this kid understand and apply the concepts we had been working on," said Will. "It made it all worthwhile."Will also serves on JA of Greater South Carolina's Young Auxiliary Board, in which he and his new network of friends recruit JA volunteers. One day he hopes to serve as a board member for JA of Greater South Carolina.
