JA Volunteer Reaches Students Through Real-Life Examples

Laura Francis, volunteer coordinator with Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia in Roanoke, recently shared a heartfelt story from one of their JA volunteers. Katy Datz has taught fourth grade Junior Achievement to students at Central Elementary School in Lexington, Va., for several years.?Katy is very familiar with the school, but not just as a volunteer. Katy attended Central Elementary as a child, and after graduating from Roanoke College and pursuing a career in development and fundraising, she returned to her hometown of Lexington in 2009.?As a graduate of Central, working with the fourth grade class through Junior Achievement has been particularly close to her heart.Katy serves as Development Director for the Rockbridge Area Health Center.?Their mission is to provide affordable and quality health care to the uninsured and underinsured residents of the community. With responsibilities focusing on fundraising and communications, Katy especially enjoyed teaching the students about building businesses.?"Not only did I teach the materials provided from Junior Achievement, but I also used a bluegrass festival and fundraiser that I planned to showcase advertising, risks and rewards, profits and losses, problem solving and other lessons from the JA Our Region <http://bit.ly/1uxWCuO> ?guides.?The class really enjoyed learning with a real example of something happening in their community.?And, it was particularly rewarding and encouraging for me to have the support of our very faithful fourth graders."I always have fun with JA," Katy concluded. "The students help me to smile and teach me all kinds of things about innovative and creative ways to grow businesses.?If only everyone in our world thought like fourth graders!"
