Students Choose JA Program Over a Vacation Day

Veazie Community School in Veazie, Maine, can be found, naturally, on School Street, just a stone?s throw from the Penobscot River. In this close-knit community of 1,900, school is a centerpiece of social interaction. Not only are parents involved, but students are remarkably engaged. So it really should be no surprise that the students in Mrs. Estes? fourth-grade class wanted to give up a day of vacation just to continue their Junior Achievement program.[Veazie Maine Map] <http://juniorachievementusa.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/veazie-maine-map.png>This enviable experience is due to the dedication of a loyal volunteer, willing to enrich student learning with a creative classroom activity. JA volunteer Ken Bustard has been presenting the JA Our Region program for five years and has found the experience to be a highlight of his year. JA Our Region introduces students to entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurs use resources to produce goods and services in a community. Students solve problems by weighing risks and rewards. Bustard recently sent a note to the Junior Achievement of Maine office, describing his excitement."This year, I incorporated a ?store? into the curriculum," Bustard stated in his note. "Students earned money during the class to make purchases at the store. It was a hit. We had to miss a week, due to vacation, and the students asked to come in for just that day. Well, we didnt, but the fact they were willing to come in on a vacation day, is reflective of their enthusiasm. JA is the single most rewarding professional experience of my year."
